    Coach Talk: New Guest Blogger

Please help us welcome Bob Craig as TBD Consulting’s newest guest blogger.  Bob Craig has been coaching and instructing supervisors and managers for 15 years. He writes instructor-led programs, creates e-Learning courses and travels throughout his company working to improve the skill sets necessary to be a successful leader in today’s ever-changing marketplace. Being able to manage change and understand the root causes behind performance issues are two of the critical skills Bob concentrates on with leaders striving for excellence and working to get better results with less people and fewer resources.

Many times supervisors express frustration that they “can’t get any of their work done” because of the overwhelming amount of interruptions, email, and other things that show up during the course of a normal day. If you are ever in that frustrated state, it might help to understand the 3-fold nature of what constitutes your “work.”

    1. Doing pre-defined work. This is what you would be doing all day if you got no input or interruptions of any sort. You’d probably be working off the list of actions and projects that you came in with…

    Coach Talk: Priorities
    Guest Author: Bob Craig

I’m wondering when you do your thinking about what you are doing.  Bill Gates sees and thinks differently than most people do.  He has an amazing ability to find the flaws, or see opportunities, or connect the dots.  He can zoom in to details with precision or zoom out to the big picture.  He can flip back in time or fast forward to the future.  He also has the ability to focus on the merits of the idea or innovation before worrying about the business case. Chances are, you could benefit from Bill’s thinking skills, even if it simply means getting a new perspective on your problems.

First in his thought pattern is Prioritize. The question is “What’s the best thing you should be thinking about?” It starts here. Since time is your most limited and precious resource, this is about asking whether the problem is even worth your time.  Before you throw more time at it, figure out whether it’s worth it.  Is it significant?  How much time should you spend on it?  Think like Bill: Today what is your priority?

    Are You Overwhelmed?
    Guest Author: Peggy Salvatore

Have you been feeling that between the government’s efforts to accelerate the uptake of health IT and  implement health reform, we are a little overwhelmed here on the ground?

I speak from the sidelines, where consultants and advisors are reading the tea leaves and trying to decide what to tell clients  – today – which might be different than what they said last week and different than what they are going to say next week.

One consultant for the pharmaceutical industry told me a few weeks ago that his very sophisticated clients and their very high-priced advisors are trying to hang on to the old solutions, while a new reality is nipping at their heels. Government pricing of drugs/doctors/medical devices/health plans is here. It is a game-changer and for those who have been sitting around the game board for awhile, and they wonder if this is where they hear “check” or the final “checkmate.”
